Forums: Index Help desk Not sure if I'm understanding this

I'm kind of lost. When I thought about making a template for a site I admin, I thought it would be more like web design/development, maybe not like a normal site, but maybe something more similar to Wordpress or Joomla!. Apparently I was wrong. :] So I just want to make sure I'm understanding what I'm reading. The main point of the templates is to manage the content of the site, right? What I'm looking to do right now is change the look of the site. When I go into the design area, all I'm able to change is the logo and some colors. I want more control than that, to come up with a more unique look and design using css. So I was hoping you could all point me in the right direction as I can't seem to find a search parameter that gets me any relevent results. :/ ToxicCosmos 12:42, December 29, 2010 (UTC)

What you would be looking for is the Mediawiki:Wikia.css page on whatever wiki you are editing, and the info from the The HTML & CSS Wiki (or whatever CSS tutorial you'd rather use). And some looking at the source to figure out what objects have what class. --Yoshord 23:08, December 30, 2010 (UTC)
Let me be less breif. Templates, as used on Wikis such as those hosted by Wikia or Wikipedia, are items that appear often on multiple pages. For instance, infoboxes on some wikis appear on every page, and have the same appearance on every page (see the box on the right side of each of these pages: [1] [2] [3]), so an infobox would be a template. I think the closest concept here to what you mean by "template" would be Skins. You've found the theme designer so you've found the easy way to modify the skin. Since that isn't flexible enough for your wants, you have to use the hard way which is editing Mediawiki:Wikia.css. It's like having to program in machine code for something not allowed in Java, if the analogy works. Since I can't fathom why anyone would call the skin a 'template' and have no experience with wordpress or Joomla, I may be/probably am wrong in my interpretation, but I hope this helped. --Yoshord 23:30, December 30, 2010 (UTC)
